Subjective Confidence of Acoustic and Phonemic Representations During Speech Perception

چکیده
Although many speech perception studies have suggested that long-term memory representations of phonemes induce categorical perception along an acoustic continuum (e.g., voice-onset time; VOT) when identifying speech sounds, other studies have suggested that acoustic information is preserved and that graded responses can be observed in within-category comparisons. Using subjective confidence reports, we present findings that support the use of both acoustic and phonemic cues during speech perception. Replicating earlier findings, we observed evidence for two welldefined phoneme categories along the voice-onset time continuum. Additionally, we also observed overconfidence in responses suggesting that the explicit representation of phonemes differs from the representations used to make identification and discrimination responses. Taken together with results from other studies, our findings support the claim that listeners can access both phonemic and acoustic representations, with explicit knowledge of the former but not the latter.

Subjective Awareness during Cross-Language Speech Perception Attending Unattended Regions of an Acoustic Continuum
Linguistic experience attenuates adult listeners’ attention to acoustic differences that are not phonemic in the listener’s language. In the present study we found that acoustic information is available to listeners after acoustic cues have been processed to identify phonemic categories. Moreover, we also found that listeners maintained an awareness of these differences by comparing the identif...
متن کاملVarying acoustic-phonemic ambiguity reveals that talker normalization is obligatory in speech processing.
The nondeterministic relationship between speech acoustics and abstract phonemic representations imposes a challenge for listeners to maintain perceptual constancy despite the highly variable acoustic realization of speech. Talker normalization facilitates speech processing by reducing the degrees of freedom for mapping between encountered speech and phonemic representations. While this process...
متن کاملHierarchical organization of speech perception in human auditory cortex
Human speech consists of a variety of articulated sounds that vary dynamically in spectral composition. We investigated the neural activity associated with the perception of two types of speech segments: (a) the period of rapid spectral transition occurring at the beginning of a stop-consonant vowel (CV) syllable and (b) the subsequent spectral steady-state period occurring during the vowel seg...
متن کاملNeural correlates of switching from auditory to speech perception.
Many people exposed to sinewave analogues of speech first report hearing them as electronic glissando and, later, when they switch into a 'speech mode', hearing them as syllables. This perceptual switch modifies their discrimination abilities, enhancing perception of differences that cross phonemic boundaries while diminishing perception of differences within phonemic categories. Using high-den...
متن کاملThe Effect of Transcribing on Beginning Learners’ Phonemic Perception
A large number of studies dealing with phonology have focused their attention on phonological production at the expense of phonological perception which provides the foundation stone for phonological production. This study focuses on phonological perception at phonemic level. The purpose of the study is helping beginning learners improve their perception of the English phonemes which are confus...
